NJ Spelman Alumnae debut Cabaret Blue featuring the Spelman College Jazz Ensemble!
On March 10, 2012, The Northern NJ Chapter of The National Alumnae Association of Spelman College will present Cabaret Blue, a jazz performance featuring The Spelman Jazz Ensemble. In an homage to the legendary jazz clubs that served as the back drop for the creation and performance of this innovative music, the 2012 event will be presented in a cabaret style setting at the beautiful Montclair Art Museum. The price of admission will also entitle ALL ticket holders to attend a catered pre-concert reception. VIP ticket holders are invited to a post-concert dessert hour.
A highlight of the evening’s activities will be the presentation of the African American Classical Music Award. The 2012 recipients are, international vocalist and educator, Melissa Walker and bassist, arranger and composer Christian McBride. Ms. Walker, is the Executive Director of Jazz House Kids and her husband, Mr. McBride, is the organization’s Creative Director. They reside in Montclair.
All proceeds from Cabaret Blue go to the NJ Spelman Alumnae Scholarship Fund. The Scholarship Fund was established in 1976 to provide financial assistance to New Jersey women attending Spelman College. Recipients possess strong academic & community service credentials and a demonstrated financial need. Awards are given annually to women from all over the state.To date, NNJC has awarded approximately 83 scholarships totaling more than $217,000. In 2006, NNJC contributed $25,000 to create an endowed scholarship at Spelman in honor of the college’s 125th Anniversary.
Reception for all ticket holders starts at 6pm sharp and the show begins at 7:30pm.
